Another day, another lawsuit. This time, Tyler Perry’s latest Netflix series, ‘She the People,’ is at the center of a legal dispute. Aimee Allison, founder and president of the national organization She the People, has filed a lawsuit against Perry and actor Terri J. Vaughn, alleging that the show infringes on her organization’s brand identity and mission.
So let’s get to the plaintiff’s case. Allison claims that the series, which premiered on Netflix on May 22, 2025, reflects the themes and objectives of her organization, which aims to elevate the voices and power of women of color as leaders in a new political and cultural era. According to the complaint, “The Series echoes many of the same themes regarding Black women’s experiences in politics that Ms. Allison addresses through her activism under the SHE THE PEOPLE mark, albeit in a slightly different format.”
Get this, the lawsuit also names Tyler Perry’s company, Tyler Vision LLC, as a defendant. Allison alleges that she had previously contracted with Vaughn to be part of a docuseries inspired by the She the People concept, and that the new Netflix series bears striking similarities to her organization’s work.
In a recent video posted on the gram on May 19, Allison emphasized the importance of protecting creative work. “When I began She the People, I poured nearly a decade into giving life to that idea,” she said. “Turning it into a platform that amplifies the leadership and power of Black and Brown women. That phrase—those words—carried weight. And they still do.”
And she went on … “But here’s the truth: There are always people watching. People who see the value in what you’ve built—and think they’re entitled to use it. To take the work, the sweat, the clarity of your vision—and profit from it.”
‘She the People’ is a political comedy series that follows Antoinette Dunkerson, portrayed by Terri J. Vaughn, who becomes Mississippi’s first Black lieutenant governor. The show explores themes of systemic racism, gender dynamics, and the complexities of Southern politics, blending political satire with family comedy.
A bit more about the series. It is co-created by Tyler Perry and Niya Palmer, with Perry serving as writer, director, and producer. Executive producers include Niya Palmer, Keisha Lance Bottoms, and Terri J. Vaughn. The first part of the series comprises eight episodes, with a second part scheduled for release on August 14, 2025.
Anyways, let’s see how it plays out in court or if there’s a settlement.
