SOURCE SPORTS: Mets’ Luisangel Acuña Named NL Rookie Of The Month

Luisangel Acuña’s rise through the Mets organization has been swift—and now it’s being recognized on a national level. The 23-year-old infielder was named the National League Rookie of the Month for March and April, capping off a strong start to his first full Major League season.

Acuña, who made his MLB debut last September in Philadelphia, has quickly cemented his place in New York’s lineup. He batted .288 over his first 27 games this season, tallying 21 hits, five doubles, and three RBIs, while slashing .288/.342/.356. He’s also flashed his elite speed, stealing seven bases and ranking in the 97th percentile in sprint speed per Statcast. His +2 baserunning run value places him in the 98th percentile league-wide.

The former Syracuse Mets standout earned his way onto the Opening Day roster after an impressive big-league cameo late last season. He hit .308 with a .966 OPS over 14 games in 2024, which included three home runs and six extra-base hits. Acuña’s performance in spring training helped him beat out Brett Baty for an infield spot while Jeff McNeil was sidelined.

Originally ranked as the No. 11 prospect in the Mets’ system by Joe DeMayo to start the year, Acuña has been a reliable contributor both offensively and defensively. Among National League rookies (minimum 50 at-bats), he ranks second in games played, third in hits and doubles, second in batting average, and third in on-base percentage.

Stepping up after Francisco Lindor’s late-season injury in 2024, Acuña started 10 of the Mets’ final 14 games, including in the postseason, going 2-for-4 in his debut at Citizens Bank Park. Since then, he’s only continued to prove that he belongs in Queens—and that the Mets’ infield depth has a bright future.
